Suramericana has joined up with a new “Works for Taxes” scheme in Colombia, providing a total of COP 10,647 million for the purpose of closing existing gaps in connectivity and education.

  • This initiative has been made possible thanks to tax contributions on the part of the SURA companies, Suramericana S.A. and Servicios Generales Suramericana S.A.S.
  • This has provided teacher training and new school furniture and fixtures as well as technological elements for educational institutions in Colombia that are preparing for their return to classroom activities.
  • These projects are scheduled to be completed over the next 12 months, thanks to the entire contributions of all participating companies, that shall benefit 47,849 students.

Suramericana, specializing in insurance and trend and risk management, is joining a new “Works for Taxes” scheme for taxpayers in Colombia, through which almost COP 10,647 million shall be provided to improve educational facilities throughout the country. With this initiative and as part of its overarching purpose of providing greater well-being and competitiveness, the Company is helping to close existing socio-economic gaps in connectivity and education by improving the digital environment as well as the conditions for teacher training and furthering educational skills.

“Forming part of this mechanism with the contributions of our companies only goes to reaffirm the important role that companies play in the region’s social development and the importance of the work carried out between the public and private sectors. Through the Works for Taxes initiative, we wish to help Colombians to make sure that they are able to live in the world of today and that of tomorrow, with the aim of improving the living conditions of many people in developing their skills, enhancing the quality of education and helping to close the existing socioeconomic gaps, "stated Juana Francisca Llano, president of Suramericana.

Suramericana is carrying out this initiative in conjunction with Grupo Nutresa, which will finance using funds from their 2020 income tax returns, different projects slated for the departments of Antioquia, Santander and Putumayo, these aimed at benefiting 47,849 students throughout the country, .

With regard to its first contribution, announced this Tuesday at the Governor's Office of Antioquia, Suramericana shall allocate COP 7,255 million for providing school furniture and technological elements for public educational institutions in this department, in addition to teacher training.

With businessmen, trade federations, the social sector, academia and the State joining forces, this is the best way to make further progress with our common purposes for bringing about greater well-being and development”, stated the Governor (Acting) of Antioquia, Luis Fernando Suárez Vélez.

“Works for Taxes” is a model in Colombia, whereby taxpaying companies can help to close socioeconomic gaps in all those regions affected by poverty and violence, by carrying out projects that have a true economic and social impact.
